Whitetop Mountain, soaring to 5,520 feet, is the highest peak in Virginia accessible by vehicle. It is an approximate 1.6 mile drive to the top of Whitetop Mountain following switchback curves along a rugged dirt road. You will pass through a variety of habitats including eastern and northern woodlands, grasslands, bald mountains, and birch and spruce forests. Wildlife abound in this desolate area, and the bird watching is spectacular. Overlooks provide vistas into North Carolina and Tennessee. Use caution when traveling especially in winter.
