The Appalachian Trail, a 2,181-mile long public footpath traversing the scenic, wooded, pastoral, wild, and culturally resonant lands of the Appalachian Mountains was built by private citizens and finished in 1937. The trail is managed by the National Park Service, Appalachian Trail Conservancy, numerous state agencies, and thousands of volunteers. Grayson County is proud to offer a delightful section of the AT which can be accessed at Grayson Highlands State Park, Elk Garden trail head, Whitetop Mountain, and Rt. 603.
