I, Leslee Wright, am an artist from in Independence, VA and also Greensboro, NC. I began practicing painting skills about 10 years ago by making 3 oil reproductions of paintings by Ray Byrum of the Pisgah Forest area. Now, I create several different types of art for my own use, to sell or to give away. I paint with brushes and flat edge tools on canvas, paper, burlap, and wood using acrylic paints or exterior deck stains. I am a juried artist for Whimsical Women (an all women art organization in Winston Salem, NC). My favorite subjects are wildflowers, skies, trees, beaches and mountains. I like to paint small animals into my landscapes. I create colorful art in an impressionist style. I am inspired by nature and color everywhere I go. In 2020, I noticed so many barns with quilt squares that I was inspired to work in a new art style. I call these works Horse and Thistle Outdoor Art for your Porch-Patio-Barn. My outdoor art pieces, with large blocks of color and fluid lines, are a fun alternative to barn quilt squares. I study the imperfections and grain of the wood to decide what to paint and give the art a natural dimension. My outdoor art, painted with exterior stains, provides vivid, long lasting colorful art that will not chip, peel off or turn yellow. For folks who prefer a more linear style, I also make 3-D pieced barn quilts. I design these large art works with wood cut into geometric shapes (stained with exterior stain and then pieced together in a “quilt” pattern) which are glued onto and then screwed into a piece of stained plywood. After the quilt pattern is secure, I paint an additional design or scene onto the plywood to complete the “quilt work”.
